Samizdat's approach to ease of use has two prongs:

  1. Standardized, protocol-based interfaces

For example, email should be available via IMAP+SMTP; chat via XMPP (Jabber).

  2. Default configuration for at least one client.

For example, Samizdat should pre-configure pidgin for users accessing Samizdat's custom XMPP server.

This means that Samizdat will "stay out of the way," which both minimizes the effort required of our developers, and allows UIs to be designed by those who specialize in implementing UIs.

It also means that users can exercise choice as to their UI preferences, by choosing alternative clients.
